Our very own local carver, Don Middleton, came into our class today to share his soapstone carvings and technique. He shared how to choose what to carve. Don spends time just staring at the stone before deciding on a design. On one particular occasion his wife asks him, “Did your stone speak to you?” He answered, “yes, it cried, HELP!”. Apparently there was a frog waiting to come out. Don gets his soapstone exclusively from Victoria and can spend up to 10 hours on a piece. He shared his technique with our class who will be carving their own unique peices with Claudia.
Don’s business is called “Romancing the Stone” and he sells beautiful pieces he has carved.
