District Assessments in our classroom

The past few weeks have been aflurry with assessments. Grade 4-7’s participate in locally developed reading and math assessments. The math assesment (DMA or District Math Assessment) tests students to the end of their grade level and involves math questions, problems and computation. The reading assessment, DART, examines students ability to read a text and answer questions about it. This is marked on a four point scale. I have been showing student’s their results individually but these tests do not come home. Teachers use these assessments to help student’s individually and also to help guide teaching for the following year. Portions of the results may appear in the student’s report cards. The following is an example question from the Grade Seven DMA.

What is the circumference of a circle if its diamter is 7m?
